What is the difference between Stop and Terminate an Amazon EC2 instance?

  • Stop an Instance: Once we stop an Amazon EC2 instance, it performs a normal shutdown and moves into a Stopped state. This instance can be restarted again at a later point of time. We are not charged for additional instance hours when the instance goes to stop state.
  • Terminate an Instance: In case we terminate an Amazon instance, the normal shutdown takes place and all the attached Amazon EBS volumes are deleted. (Except if deleteOnTermination attribute is set as false on the volume). The terminate instance will also be deleted, and it can never be started again.
